A New Parliamentary Chapter Begins as PLU Celebrates Election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker

Uganda has entered a new parliamentary era following the successful election and swearing-in of Rt. Hon. Jacob Mackson Oboth-Oboth as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament. The development has attracted widespread reactions from political leaders, supporters, and Ugandans both at home and in the diaspora, with many describing the moment as a sign of continuity, stability, and renewed legislative leadership.

Among the notable voices was Hon.David Kabanda, Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda and Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, Mubende District. Speaking after the election results, Kabanda openly credited Gen.Muhoozi Kainerugaba for backing the victorious candidates.

My boss General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, I take this opportunity to report that the two candidates you endorsed and instructed us to deliver have now been successfully elected and sworn in. Rt Hon. Jacob Mackson Oboth is Speaker and Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

The statement underscored the growing political influence of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), whose members and supporters have increasingly positioned themselves as key actors in shaping Uganda’s political direction. The election of the two parliamentary leaders is being viewed by many observers as a strategic victory for forces aligned with national unity, institutional continuity, and patriotic mobilization.

Across the diaspora, the victory was equally celebrated. In a congratulatory message issued by the PLU UK and Ireland Chapter, Chairman Ismail Wandera praised both leaders for earning the trust of Parliament and the Ugandan people.

The statement described Rt. Hon. Jacob Mackson Oboth-Oboth’s election was “a testament to distinguished service, integrity, and the confidence that Members of Parliament and the nation have placed in his leadership.” It further expressed confidence that his experience and commitment to democratic values would guide the 12th Parliament with wisdom and fairness.

Similarly, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa was commended for his continued service as Deputy Speaker, with the PLU diaspora chapter highlighting his “steady hand and institutional knowledge” as vital strengths for the next parliamentary term.

The message also emphasized the hopes of millions of Ugandans both at home and abroad. According to the PLU UK and Ireland Chapter, the 12th Parliament now carries the responsibility of upholding accountability, strengthening the rule of law, and serving the people with honour and distinction.

Political analysts say the overwhelming support shown toward the new parliamentary leadership reflects the desire for a stable legislative institution capable of navigating Uganda through a period of economic transformation, regional engagement, and growing youth participation in governance.

For supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda, the outcome represents more than a parliamentary transition. It symbolizes the consolidation of a political movement that continues to rally around patriotism, national unity, and strategic leadership.

As the 12th Parliament officially begins its work, expectations remain high among citizens, political actors, and the diaspora community. Many Ugandans will be watching closely to see how the new leadership handles national debates, promotes accountability, and responds to the aspirations of the people over the next five years.

With messages of unity, patriotism, and confidence pouring in from across the country and abroad, the election of Rt. Hon. Jacob Mackson Oboth-Oboth and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa marks what many hope will be a defining chapter in Uganda’s parliamentary history.
